Q; Who are on the Committee?
A; Committee members are local residents interested in bringing curling to the Town of
Q; When will the rink be built?
A; The Committee is presently working to develop a business plan, attain the necessary funding, and obtain the required approvals from the Township. The target date for starting the project is Spring 2010.
Q; Who will own the curling centre?
A; The curling membership will own and operate the curling centre. It is the hope of the Committee that with the proper agreements, the Township will permit the construction of the curling centre on lands owned by the Township.
Q; Where will the centre be built?
A; Presently there are three Town owned sites that the Committee has identified as being sufficient to accommodate the proposed curling rink
Q; How many sheets will the curling centre have?
A; The size of the rink may depend on community interest and construction cost, however the Committee is working towards the construction of a six sheet rink.
Q; How much will it cost to play?
A; This too depends on community interest and construction costs. A major goal of the Committee is to design a curling centre that uses the latest technology to improve efficiency, not just to reduce operating costs, but to reduce the impact of a rink on the environment. While through their dues, the membership will have to pay off construction costs, it is anticipated that a reduced operating costs will require members to pay similar, if not lower, dues to other neighbouring curling facilities. This fee will probably range from $200-$600 per year depending on a variety of factors including age and level of involvement.
Q; What do I need to get started curling
A; Curling requires very little equipment to get started. To play in a league, you’ll need a clean pair of running shoes and some loose fitting but warm clothing. Many curlers purchase curling shoes and other equipment designed to improve comfort on the ice and improve performance.
Q; Will there be a junior, bantam and little rock program?
A; The long term viability of a curling centre relies on its ability to develop a strong youth curling program. In addition to providing physical activity, we hope curling will be seen as a cost efficient alternative to other local winter sports for the youth of the community.
Q; Will the curling centre be handicap accessible?
A; Given the emergence of wheelchair curling and the Special Olympics, the Committee is determined to construct a curling centre that provides easy access to all the curling facilities for athletes of all physical abilities.
Q; How can I get involved?
A; There are three easy ways to get involved in bringing curling to Whitchurch-Stouffville.
To begin with, you can become a member. Without curlers, a curling facility is just an empty building.
Secondly, you can volunteer your time. Even if you’re not interested in curling, there are many subcommittees that need helping hands. To keep construction costs down, the Committee is looking for skilled or unskilled volunteers to help with the actual construction of the building.
Thirdly, you can help financially. The Committee is looking for individuals to sponsor the construction of the curling centre. Donations to help with construction costs and the cost of curling equipment are always needed, and always very appreciated.
